If you’ve made it into a prop firm trading program, congratulations—you’ve already beaten the odds. But here’s the thing: landing a funded account is one challenge… keeping it safe is a whole other game.

Prop firm accounts—particularly those operating on MetaTrader 5 (MT5)—are not only victims of market volatility. They are also potential victims of cyber attacks, phishing scams, and good old-fashioned human error. A single mis-click or careless login, and your money, gains, and perhaps even your spot in the program are gone.

The silver lining? Protecting your MT5 account from cybercriminals doesn’t need you to have a cybersecurity degree. All it takes are some good habits, a little bit of common sense, and a heightened sense of vigilance regarding how you enter and work with your platform.

Let’s discuss the most important MT5 security recommendations that every prop trader should be aware of.

Why MT5 Security is More Critical in Prop Trading

When you’re trading your own capital, a security breach is a money worry. But on the prop desk, it’s worse than that—it’s a job risk.

Here’s why security is such a big deal:

  • You’re not the exclusive owner of the money – Prop firms rely on you to take care of their capital. If you screw up security and get compromised, you can lose that trust in an instant.
  • You could lose your funding – Prop firms include terms in their contracts that permit them to close accounts if there is suspected fraud or violations.
  • Your performance data is worth something – Even without funds being stolen, hackers could learn about your strategy, trading methods, or outstanding positions.

Think of your MT5 account as the keys to a fast car that someone’s giving you permission to use. You wouldn’t leave those keys sitting out in a busy café, would you?

Tip #1: Set a Unique, Strong Password (No, “Forex123” Doesn’t Pass)

Your MT5 password must be lengthy, original, and never used anywhere else. Too many traders opt for something easy to type in—if they switch between demos or live accounts a lot throughout the day but that is a security nightmare waiting to unleash itself.

A good MT5 password must:

  • Be no less than 12 characters long
  • Contain uppercase, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Steer clear of personal information like birthdays, pet names, and favorite currency pairs.

Be stored in a secure password manager, not on a sticky note next to your monitor

  • Example of a weak password: Pound123
  • Example of a strong one: G7!pX4w9Lz#sBq2

If remembering it feels impossible, that’s actually a good sign. That’s where password managers like LastPass, Bitwarden, or 1Password come in—they keep it safe and autofill it when needed.

Tip #2: Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Wherever Possible

MT5 itself doesn’t support 2FA, but a lot of prop shops and brokers do—particularly on the client side. This is such that even if somebody who wants to steal your info gets your password, they have to obtain that secondary layer (such as a code on your cell phone) to access things. It’s like having the second lock on your door. Sure, a thief can pick the first one but then they’ll still have to contend with the deadbolt.

If your prop company provides 2FA:

  • Always use app-based authentication (Authy, Google Authenticator) over SMS as the former can be compromised.
  • In the event that you misplace your phone, save your backup codes offline.

Tip #3: Download MT5 Only from Reliable Places

Downloading an imposter MT5 app is a great mistake. Hackers make replica versions that grab your credentials the moment you log in.

To prevent this:

  • Start MetaTrader 5 Download directly from MetaQuotes or your prop company’s official link.
  • If you’re using mobile, stick to the official Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  • Always double-check the developer’s name before hitting “install.”

If you’re ever unsure, ask your prop firm for the official download link. It takes 30 seconds but it could save your account.

Tip #4: Keep Your Device (and MT5) Updated

Old software is like an open window for hackers. Updates aren’t just for new features—they patch vulnerabilities.

So:

  • Update MT5 whenever a new version is available.
  • Keep your operating system and antivirus up to date.
  • Restart your device after big updates to make sure everything applies properly.

If you’re using a VPS for trading (common in prop firms), make sure that VPS is also regularly updated. Many traders forget this and leave security holes wide open.

Tip #5: Secure Your Internet Connection

Public Wi-Fi may be fine for Netflix in a coffee shop but is a disaster for secure trading. Traffic can be intercepted and your MT5 log-in credentials stolen in seconds.

Safer alternatives:

  • Trade on a password-protected, private network
  • If you need to trade on public Wi-Fi, employ a decent VPN service to encrypt your connection
  • Log in to your broker or prop firm portal only when on trusted networks

Pro tip: Even when at home, reset your router’s default admin password. It’s one of the simplest entry points for hackers.

Tip #6: Be Careful of Phishing Scams

Phishing emails or messages are a trader’s silent killer. They’ll appear to be from your broker, prop firm, or even MT5 itself but are used to trick you into revealing your login details.

Warning signs of phishing:

  • Emergency-sounding language such as “Your account will be shut down in 24 hours”
  • Links that are a bit “wrong” (metatrader5.com vs. meta-trader5.com)
  • Demands for your password or entire account information

Golden rule: Never follow a dodgy link. If unsure, simply go to your broker’s site rather than clicking an email link.

Tip #7: Employ Read-Only Investor Passwords Whenever Possible

MT5 enables you to create a read-only (investor) password. This will allow someone to see what’s going on in your account, but won’t let them trade or withdraw funds.

If your prop firm mentor, account analyst, or even the tech support rep needs to look at something, provide them with the investor password—not the master password.
